This school year, Great Clips donated $42,000 to AdoptAClassroom.org to support Indiana classrooms. From July 13 to August 22, 2016, 79 Indiana Great Clips salons offered customers a discount on a future haircut when they made a donation to AdoptAClassroom.org.
“We’re so thankful for Great Clips’ continued support in helping us fund classrooms in need,” said Ann Ness, AdoptAClassroom.org executive director. “Our teachers rely on generous donations from corporate sponsors like Great Clips and individual donors to stock their classrooms with important supplies.”
Surprising a Great Teacher
In January, Great Clips presented their donation check at an Indiana Pacers basketball game and joined AdoptAClassroom.org to surprise Newby Memorial Elementary 2nd grade teacher Sarah Vance with a $503 classroom adoption. Vance, as well as teachers throughout Indiana, spend money out of their own paycheck to provide supplies for their students who may otherwise go without. Vance spends an average of $400 a year purchasing hands-on manipulatives, writing utensils, cardstock and copy paper, highlighters, and storage containers.
“This donation means the world to me and my students,” said Vance. “It’s important that all of my students have what they need to succeed in school. The students are really pumped to use this money for our class.”
The Supply Gap
Fifty-one percent of U.S. public school children come from families who cannot afford to provide them with the school supplies they need in the classroom. Teachers spend an average of nearly $600 per year out of their own pocket on classroom materials to fill the supply gap.
More than 850 Indiana teachers are working to close the gap by actively crowdfunding on AdoptAClassroom.org. Nationally, more than 216,000 teachers have used AdoptAClassroom.org to ask for help. To date, Great Clips has donated more than $77,000 to AdoptAClassroom.org in support of teachers across the United States in need of supplies.
“I’m proud of our Indiana Great Clips team members for their hard work in raising these funds,” said Tim Lawless, Indiana Great Clips’ franchisee. “Teachers make our communities stronger and we’re happy to give them our support.”
