We’re excited to announce that F.I.S.H. Foundation has joined AdoptAClassroom.org as the national seed partner for our Special Education Fund!
In support of special education classrooms, F.I.S.H. Foundation awarded us $15,000 to help launch the AdoptAClassroom.org Special Education Fund. Selected special education teachers will receive a $600 classroom adoption to support their students.
Why Special Education?
According to a 2015 Building a Grad Nation Report, 90 percent of special education students can meet regular diploma requirements with the right supports. Currently, only 62 percent of students have the materials they require.
Because of F.I.S.H. Foundation’s generous support, we can help more than 500 special education students and their teachers by empowering them to stock their classrooms with supplies. However, with more than 6.5 million special education students nationwide, there’s still a lot of work to be done. More than 3,300 special education teachers are actively asking for help on AdoptAClassroom.org, and they’re relying on individual donors to support our fund.
Providing for students in need
Pre-Kindergarten special education teacher Korto Dixon received $600 from the AdoptAClassroom.org Special Education Fund. All of her students are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. She was buying materials using her own money before receiving funds on AdoptAClassroom.org. If Dixon couldn’t provide the supplies her students need, she would have difficulty keeping her young learners engaged.
After receiving AdoptAClassroom.org funds, Dixon immediately bought hands-on materials to help her students stay focused. Classroom materials for an early childhood special education environment adds up quickly but with the funding, she was empowered to purchase instruments, fairy tale felt sets, puzzles, games, sand and water play sets, and basic supplies.
Join F.I.S.H. Foundation and support even more special education classrooms with a gift to the AdoptAClassroom.org Special Education Fund.
